"That's home to me" - Leonie Schiemenz sews traditional costumes - Spree Forest’s artisans fight to preserve centuries-old craft traditions
In the Spree Forest region, traditional halloween costumes remain a vital part of local culture. A small group of dedicated craftspeople is working to keep these customs alive, despite growing challenges. Their efforts ensure that craft ideas like embroidery, weaving, and costume-making skills continue to thrive in the area.
Leonie Schiemenz, a 24-year-old from Burg, has taken up the task of preserving traditional embroidery and costume-making. She opened her own workshop around a year and a half ago and now operates at full capacity, requiring no further advertising. Alongside her craft, she teaches embroidery classes to pass on her knowledge to others. Yet, rising prices and a shortage of embroidery thread make her work increasingly difficult, as producers shut down and supplies dwindle.
For decades, Christa and Dieter Dziumbla have dedicated themselves to maintaining traditional costumes in their private museum. Dieter, now 84, is a skilled multitalent—spinning yarn, knitting socks, and weaving baskets from willow wood. Their collection reflects the deep-rooted importance of these garments in local festivals and ceremonies. Near Lübbenau, Sarah Gwiszcz has given traditional costumes a modern twist. Since founding her label Wurlawy in 2014—named after a Sorbian legend meaning 'wild Spreewald women'—she has blended heritage designs with contemporary styles. The tradition remains strong, with every girl in the region still receiving her own costume after confirmation or a youth initiation ceremony.
The work of these craftspeople ensures that Spree Forest traditions stay alive for future generations. From embroidery workshops to private museums and modern adaptations, their efforts keep the region’s cultural heritage visible. Yet, the declining availability of materials poses an ongoing challenge for those committed to this craft.
