Spontaneous Internship Chances for Summer 2025 Now Available

The National Archives is offering internships for Summer 2025, providing an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in the field of history and archives. These internships are available at both the College Park, MD and Washington, DC locations, which are part of the National Archives Field Locations.

The internships primarily focus on archival processing, reference services, digitization, and preservation. Interns can expect to work between 10 and 40 hours per week for approximately 12 weeks, with typical schedules offering 30 hours or more per week. The key responsibilities include arranging and describing records, digitizing archival materials, basic preservation tasks, and some reference assistance.

Interns will also have the opportunity to participate in staff meetings and development programs, providing a comprehensive learning experience. However, the work involves sedentary tasks as well as some physical requirements, such as the ability to climb 15-foot ladders and lift up to 50 pounds.

To be eligible for these internships, applicants must be current or former bachelor's degree or graduate students in history, museum studies, library science, or related fields. The physical ability to perform these tasks is essential, as is the ability to work independently with attention to detail and manage multiple deadline-driven projects.

While the National Archives' website does not explicitly mention academic credit or volunteer internship opportunities, similar institutions offer these options to students. Therefore, it may be possible to earn academic credit or participate as a volunteer depending on university policies and specific internship agreements.

Interested applicants are encouraged to visit the National Archives internship webpage for Summer 2025 and contact them directly for updated specifics on internship timing, credit, and volunteer possibilities. Applications for summer 2025 internships closed on March 28, 2025.

In addition to the College Park, MD and Washington, DC locations, the internships are also available in the Washington, DC-area within the National Archives Field Locations. These locations include Presidential Libraries and Museums. The internships at the Washington, DC location are also part of the National Archives Field Locations.

The National Archives Field Locations are based in the Washington, DC-area, and the internships last for 10 weeks. More information about the program can be found on the National Archives' website.
