Southwest Airlines and DISH Network bring free in-flight entertainment to passengers
DISH Network has teamed up with Southwest Airlines to offer passengers free movies and TV shows on their personal devices. The partnership allows travellers to stream entertainment without extra charges, even without purchasing in-flight Wi-Fi separately.
To mark the launch, around 100 passengers received free iPad 2 tablets during their flights.
The new service lets Southwest passengers access live TV channels and on-demand programmes using the airline's onboard Wi-Fi. It works on Apple iPads and iPhones, as well as some other mobile devices. Unlike JetBlue, which provides built-in screens with DIRECTV and Sirius XM, this system relies on passengers bringing their own gadgets.
DISH Network sees the deal as a marketing push and a test run for a broader internet-based service. The company may eventually shift from satellite operations to a fully digital streaming model. Industry analysts, including The Motley Fool, have noted the growing competition in streaming, publishing reports like *Who Will Own the Future of Television?*
The partnership gives Southwest flyers free entertainment without needing to buy Wi-Fi access. DISH Network's move also signals a potential shift toward digital-only streaming in the future. For now, the service remains limited to compatible devices on select flights.
