South Carolina’s school funding rises while teacher pay plummets
South Carolina’s education system supports nearly 800,000 students across 72 districts, with over 56,000 public school teachers. Funding for schools has grown in recent years, yet teacher pay has fallen sharply during the same period. New figures reveal a mix of rising budgets and declining wages for educators.
The state now spends $18,222 per student, placing it 26th in the US. This marks a 9.2% increase since 2020, the 16th-largest rise nationally. Only 15 states saw bigger percentage jumps in per-student spending during that time.
The state’s education budget has expanded, but teacher pay continues to shrink. With federal relief funds and rising per-student spending, the gap between funding and wages remains a key issue. Officials have not clarified how pandemic money was used or how it affected salaries.
