Sonnenland School's Advent reading project ends with prizes and mayoral surprise
Sonnenland School recently wrapped up a festive reading project just in time for Christmas. During Advent, pupils took part in Reading for Fun, an initiative designed to encourage children to explore books through daily puzzles. The programme ended with four young winners selected from all who completed the challenges.
The project saw one first-grade class and three third-grade classes working together with Neuwied City Library. Each day, students solved a puzzle based on The Sanctuary Farm, a story by Bettina Obrecht. Their answers combined to form a final solution, qualifying them for a prize draw.
Mayor Peter Jung visited the school to meet the children and help pick the winners. Four pupils—two girls and two boys—were chosen at random from all successful participants. The event also had support from school principal Ina Mang, teachers Volker Trümper and Anna Lenz, and the library team.
Reading for Fun was developed by the Reading for Fun and Media Literacy working group, part of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Library Center. The programme aimed to make reading engaging through an Advent calendar format, blending storytelling with interactive challenges.
The initiative brought together pupils, teachers, and local officials to celebrate reading in a creative way. With puzzles, prizes, and a visit from the mayor, the project gave children a memorable experience during the holiday season. The school and library plan to continue supporting similar literacy efforts in the future.
