Double Spoiler Alert: The solutions are below
Ready to learn the answers to today's Connections puzzle? I'm giving them all away below.
Yellow Answers:
The group for the yellow category encompasses standoffish individuals. The words are: COOL, DISTANT, REMOTE, RESERVED.
Green Answers:
This green group is about essentials that people usually pay for on a monthly basis. The answers are: CABLE, GAS, TRASH, WATER.
Blue Answers:
These terms are related to electrical measurements. Here, you'll find: CHARGE, CURRENT, RESISTANCE, VOLTAGE.
Purple Answers:
This group features phrases that describe moving parts. The answers are: DOVETAIL, HIP, PIZZA, SPIKE LEE'S PIECES
How did I solve today's Connections?
SPIKE LEE'S PIECES is a curious one! I can't see how a movie director relates to the other words yet, but let's see.
CURRENT, VOLTAGE, and CHARGE all seem connected to electricity. Is RESISTANCE also associated with electricity? 🟦 Yes, it certainly is!
DISTANT and REMOTE could be interchangeable, but I don't see others.
Maybe WATER, TRASH, GAS, and CABLE go together as utilities. 🟩
HIP and COOL could overlap, but I'm not sure.
Oh, it seems COOL, RESERVED, DISTANT, and REMOTE are all synonyms for aloof. 🟨
That leaves PIZZA, HIP, SPIKE LEE'S PIECES, and DOVETAIL. What on earth could these be related to? I think PIZZA and SPIKE LEE'S PIECES have something in common due to their connection to New York. 🟪 Oh, _ _ _ JOINT. A DOVETAIL joint is a type of connection in woodworking, HIP is a body part, PIZZA is a food item you might grab in New York, and "SPIKE LEE'S PIECES" is a phrase often used to describe the films made by SPIKE LEE.
How to play Connections:
I've got a full guide for Connections, but I'll give you a quick rundown on the rules:
Find the Connections game on the New York Times website or in their Games app (formerly the Crossword app). You'll encounter a game board with 16 tiles, each containing a word or phrase. Your objective is to select a group of four tiles that have a meaningful connection. Sometimes they share a common theme or possess wordplay.
Once you've chosen your group, click submit. If you guessed correctly, the category and color will be shown. (Yellow is the simplest, followed by green, then blue, and finally purple.) If your guess was incorrect, you'll get another chance to try again.
You win the game upon correctly identifying all four groups. But if you've made four mistakes before completing the puzzle, the answers will be provided.
How to triumph in Connections:
The most crucial piece of advice for winning Connections is to expect tricky groupings. Anticipate overlapping groupings. For example, a previous puzzle seemed to involve six breakfast items: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLES, and CEREALS. However, BACON was actually part of a group of artists, and EGG formed a group of things that come in dozens. So, keep this in mind when submitting your guesses.
If you're stuck, search for the words that seem unrelated to the others. If WHISTLER is the only word that reminds you of the painting called "Whistler's Mother," you're probably on the right track. When I solved that one, I even investigated whether there was a painter named Close because Close didn't fit any of the obvious themes.
Another strategy when stuck is to read a few helpful hints, like these we provide each day. Check back tomorrow for the next puzzle!
