Solingen Celebrates Frida Kahlo's Legacy in a Theatrical Tribute on Women's Day
Solingen will honour the life and art of Frida Kahlo on International Women's Day, March 8. The city's cultural institutions have joined forces to stage a theatrical performance in her memory. Tickets are now available for the evening event at the Theater und Konzerthaus.
The production, directed by Maja Delić, will be performed by the Burghofbühne Dinslaken ensemble. It explores Kahlo's journey, from her early years painting in bed after a near-fatal bus accident to her rise as a defining artist of the 20th century. Her self-portraits, marked by her striking almond-shaped eyes and unbroken eyebrows, became iconic.
Kahlo's turbulent relationship with Diego Rivera deeply influenced her work, with her canvases often reflecting emotional pain. Since her death in 1954, her legacy has expanded globally, embraced by feminist and political movements. Exhibitions in Vienna and Friedrichshafen in 2026, along with theatre productions like *Frida – Viva la Vida*, keep her story alive. The March 8 performance begins at 7:30 PM in the Pina Bausch Hall. Organisers include the city's cultural management, the Office for Gender Equality, Kunstmuseum Solingen, and the city library. Audiences can book seats online at www.theatersolingen.de or by calling the box office on +49 212 / 204820.
The event coincides with International Women's Day, highlighting Kahlo's enduring impact as a symbol of resilience and creativity. Her art continues to inspire discussions on identity, politics, and cultural heritage. The Solingen performance offers a chance to experience her story through live theatre.
