Social Worker Tolga Sürget - The Man for Challenging Lives

Tolga Sürget works as a school social worker at Berufskolleg Glockenspitz, a vocational college in Krefeld, Germany. His role focuses on supporting teenagers who need a second chance at education through the AVV program. The initiative helps students without a school-leaving certificate build a foundation for their future.

Sürget is responsible for around 30 young people, aged 16 to 18, within the AVV (Ausbildungsvorbereitung Vollzeit) program. His main task is one-on-one counselling, where he aims to empower students and teach them self-reliance. Nearly half of the teenagers he works with struggle most with a lack of future perspective.

The AVV program is designed to help students earn a lower secondary school certificate by the end of ninth grade. This qualification allows them to move into vocational training, join a job program, or continue studying at a vocational college. Sürget shares his workload with two colleagues, as the needs of roughly 160 students would be too much for one person alone. To better understand the challenges his students face, Sürget takes a methodical approach. He translates their struggles into data, helping him tailor his support more effectively. Even after students complete the program, he remains available for advice. However, his focus must eventually shift to the next AVV class.

The AVV program gives teenagers a pathway to further education or employment. With Sürget’s guidance, students gain skills and confidence to transition into a more independent life. The initiative continues to provide opportunities for those who need them most.
