Sir David Attenborough Leads £30M Appeal to Save Rothbury Estate

The Rothbury Estate, a sprawling 9,486-acre land in Northumberland, is at the heart of a high-stakes appeal. Sir David Attenborough has joined the cause, aiming to raise £30 million to buy and conserve this vital piece of nature. The estate, currently listed for sale by Lord Max Percy, is home to diverse wildlife and offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for environmental conservation.

The Rothbury Estate, featuring woodlands, rivers, historic ruins, and the Simonside Hills, is a haven for various species, including merlins, red squirrels, and eels. The Wildlife Trusts, in partnership with Northumberland Wildlife Trust, has already bought the western side and launched an appeal to acquire the rest. The plan focuses on conservation, restoration, and rewilding, aiming to create a 40-mile nature corridor stretching to the Scottish-English border.

Rolex's Perpetual Planet Initiative has partnered with CNN to drive awareness and education around key sustainability issues, supporting the appeal. Sir David Attenborough, a prominent voice in wildlife conservation, has lent his support, stating that the Rothbury Estate should be a place where people and nature can thrive side by side. The UK government has committed to protecting 30% of its land and sea for nature by 2030, aligning with the global UN target.

If the appeal fails to raise the remaining funds by September 2026, the estate could be broken up for multiple uses, losing this unique nature opportunity. The Rothbury Estate, the largest piece of land on the market in England for the last 30 years, is a critical piece in the puzzle of the UK's commitment to nature conservation. The successful acquisition and conservation of this estate will bring us one step closer to achieving the government's 2030 target.
