Self-Taught Artist Nandan Purkayastha's 'Continuum' Blends Mythology and Personal Narratives

Self-taught artist Nandan Purkayastha is showcasing his unique blend of eastern mythology and personal narratives in his solo exhibition 'Continuum' at the prestigious Auditorium of Jehangir Art Gallery. The exhibition, presented by Sanchit Art Gallery, features watercolours and will be on display till November 10th.

Purkayastha, who initially pursued design, discovered his artistic voice after exploring various mediums. He finds that traditional art often reflects emotional states and mental rhythms. His works merge eastern mythological influences with personal mythology, creating a shared visual language.

Purkayastha's artistic journey began at venues like the Birla Academy of Art and Culture in Kolkata and the Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi before his solo exhibition at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. He chooses to paint in monochrome or colour based on the mood and emotion he wants to convey. The exhibition features watercolours, a medium Purkayastha favours for its balance of control and spontaneity.

Purkayastha, who couldn't pursue formal art education, has evolved a distinct artistic language. His purpose is to create, evolve, and leave behind a legacy through art. The 'Continuum' exhibition is a testament to his artistic growth and unique perspective.
