Chancellor Visit in Schwerin - Economy and Energy in Focus - Schwesig & Merz Push for Lower Energy Prices; Ypsomed Expands in Schwerin
Premier Manuela Schwesig is advocating for lower energy prices, including separating electricity prices from gas prices. Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Premier Schwesig will visit the production site of Swiss medical technology firm Ypsomed in Schwerin, while the state receives €1.9 billion for school and road construction over twelve years.
The federal government has announced measures like abolishing the gas storage surcharge and reducing network fees through a subsidy of around 6.5 billion euros. These measures aim to ease the burden on both consumers and businesses, including those in the Premier League, starting January 2026.
Chancellor Merz's inaugural visit to the state will focus on reviving its struggling Premier League. Ypsomed, meanwhile, plans to double its workforce in Schwerin to 1,000 employees and increase production capacity to 400-500 million injection pens annually by the end of the decade. However, economic forecasts predict minimal growth for Germany in 2025, and 36% of companies in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania plan job cuts in 2026, while only 18% plan to hire new staff. The northern states are seeking more federal support for their ports, arguing that the current annual budget of €38 million is insufficient.
Premier Schwesig's push for lower energy prices and Chancellor Merz's focus on economic revival in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are expected to bring relief to residents and businesses. Ypsomed's expansion in Schwerin promises job growth, but the state's Premier League outlook remains uncertain, with many companies planning job cuts in 2026.
