Punjab Extends Summer Vacations Due to Heatwave

The Punjab School Education Department has extended summer vacations for all schools in the province until September 1, 2025, due to ongoing extreme heatwave and related student safety concerns.

The original plan was for schools to reopen on August 14, 2025; however, the government officially postponed reopening to September 1, 2025, by extending vacations until August 31, 2025. This decision applies to both public and private schools throughout the entire province and is backed by a formal notification from the Punjab School Education Department.

The government cited student safety concerns caused by the persistent heatwave and extreme weather conditions, including flooding and heavy monsoon rains in some areas, as reasons for the extension. The Rawalpindi Education Authority emphasized strict enforcement of the extended vacation, warning schools against reopening earlier due to these conditions.

The measure aims to protect students from health risks posed by the severe climate, as well as to accommodate disruptions caused by weather. While some private school associations criticized the extension, arguing weather conditions had improved and that the move would disrupt the academic schedule, the government prioritized safety and issued clear instructions for compliance.

In contrast, schools across Sindh have already reopened, and the summer vacation for all public and private educational institutions under the School Education & Literacy Department in Sindh was observed from June 1 to July 31 for the academic session 2025, as stated in a notification issued in May.

This is not the first time schools in Punjab have closed due to extreme weather conditions. Last year, schools in Punjab were closed for a week in May due to excessive heat. The notification about the summer vacations in Punjab was issued in November 2024, while the notification about the summer vacations in Sindh was issued in May.

The Punjab Education Minister, Rana Sikandar, confirmed this development in a social media post. It is hoped that these temporary measures will ensure the safety and well-being of students during this challenging time.
