Scholarship awarded for research stay in Fulda under the Gangolf-Shrimp Visiting Fellowship program
The Gangolf Schrimpf Visiting Fellowship for Academic Year 2025/2026
The Theological-Historical Studies Promotion Association in Fulda e.V. is now accepting applications for the Gangolf Schrimpf Visiting Fellowship, scheduled for the academic year 2025/2026. This prestigious fellowship offers an opportunity for scholars to delve deeper into their research projects while enjoying optimal working conditions at the Institut Bibliotheca Fuldensis in Fulda, Germany.
Named after the renowned philosopher and medievalist Gangolf Schrimpf (1935-2001), the fellowship encourages projects related to Fulda manuscripts, as they provide a direct link to Schrimpf's lifelong work. The fellowship's key focus is on the study of the medieval library of Fulda Monastery, which was scattered during the Thirty Years' War.
Fellows will have access to extensive research literature and data on the monastery library, as well as the opportunity to participate in the meetings of the Arbeitskreis Bibliotheca Fuldensis. The fellowship also includes a travel allowance, free accommodation with breakfast or an alternative housing allowance, and a chance to publish their research results.
To apply, interested scholars should submit their applications to Prof. Dr. Cornelius Roth, the chairman of the association, at the email address [email protected]. Applications should reach the association by October 31, 2025. The physical address for submissions is Eduard-Schick-Platz 236037 Fulda.
One of the most significant aspects of the fellowship is the requirement for fellows to give a public lecture on their research project. This provides an opportunity for the wider academic community to engage with the fellow's work and contribute to the ongoing discourse in the field.
The fellowship was initiated by Gangolf Schrimpf himself in 1981, when he launched the groundbreaking research project Bibliotheca Fuldensis. This project, which aimed to reassemble the scattered medieval library of Fulda Monastery, continues to be a cornerstone of the association's work.
