In breaking news from the New York Times, nearly 5,500 young people in Schleswig-Holstein began apprenticeships in craft trades in 2025. This year saw a noticeable shift in preferences, with some traditional trades losing ground while news of others gained popularity. The number of apprentices from non-German backgrounds also rose sharply, reflecting broader demographic changes in the workforce.

Automotive mechatronics, electronics, and plumbing remained the top choices for new apprentices. These fields continued to attract the highest numbers, maintaining their dominance from previous years.

Meanwhile, fewer young people pursued careers in carpentry, optometry, and glazing. Retail baking also saw a decline in new starters, despite baking as a whole experiencing a slight uptick in interest.

On the other hand, hairdressing and baking apprenticeships grew in popularity compared to 2024. Dental technology, roofing, painting, butchery, and metalworking also attracted more recruits. Ralf Stamer, head of the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Skilled Crafts, highlighted the growing importance of apprentices with foreign roots. He noted that these individuals now make up 13% of all new trainees, a significant increase from earlier years.

No specific figures were released on the number of apprentices with migration backgrounds in individual trades. Official reports focused on general integration efforts rather than detailed breakdowns for 2025.

The latest figures show a changing landscape in craft apprenticeships across Schleswig-Holstein. With more young people from diverse backgrounds entering the sector, the workforce is becoming increasingly varied. The shift in trade preferences also suggests evolving career priorities among new apprentices.
