Schaffhausen Schools Gain Flexibility: No More Friday Afternoon Classes from 2026
Starting from the 2026/27 academic year, schools in the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen will gain greater flexibility in their schedules. The Schaffhausen Cantonal Board of Education has abolished the requirement for Friday afternoon classes, affecting all schools and students across the canton.
The change aims to provide more autonomy to schools and address challenges faced by part-time teachers who were often unavailable on Fridays. The new regulation allows each school to set its own schedule or even forgo Friday afternoon instruction entirely.
The proposal originated from a teachers' conference and was supported by educational considerations. Students often struggle to maintain focus during late Friday afternoon classes, making this a welcome change for both teachers and students.
From the 2026/27 school year onward, schools in Schaffhausen will have the freedom to design their Friday schedules, potentially allowing children and adolescents to start their weekends earlier.
