Culture Ministry Sees Reversal in School Absenteeism Trend - Saxony’s schools slash class cancellations after decade of struggles

Saxony’s schools have cut class cancellations for the first time in ten years. The improvement follows a set of measures introduced in spring 2023 to tackle staff shortages and rising student needs. Education Minister Conrad Clemens (CDU) has now shared the latest figures, calling the results a sign of progress.

In spring 2023, the state’s department of education rolled out new strategies to reduce cancellations. These included hiring more substitute teachers, adjusting lesson schedules, and expanding digital learning tools. Six months later, the data shows a clear effect.

The department’s measures have led to fewer cancellations, even as student numbers grow. More teachers have been hired, easing pressure on schools. However, ongoing shortages and rising support needs mean further steps will be required.
