Police Advises Thousands of Children and Youth - Saxony-Anhalt's youth counselling cuts reoffending with early support

The police youth counselling service in Saxony-Anhalt has provided support to thousands of young people over the past four years. Between 2021 and 2025, more than 8,800 individual counselling sessions took place, reaching over 20,000 individuals in total. The programme focuses on preventing repeat offences and helping young offenders reintegrate into society.

The service operates from 15 main locations, with additional outreach sites set up as needed. It employs 21 staff members, though four positions remain unfilled. Their work centres on early intervention, offering social and educational support to children, adolescents, and young adults suspected of offences.

Young offenders are guided toward further aid programmes to tackle the underlying causes of their behaviour. The goal is to prevent relapses and ensure long-term social integration. By addressing issues before they escalate, the service aims to break cycles of repeat and worsening offences. While detailed figures on juvenile crime rates between 2016 and 2021 are not available, the service continues to expand its reach. The focus remains on practical support rather than statistical tracking, helping young people move away from criminal behaviour.

The programme's efforts have already connected thousands of young individuals with necessary resources. With ongoing outreach and a dedicated team, the service aims to reduce reoffending and improve outcomes for vulnerable youth. The next steps include filling vacant roles to strengthen support across Saxony-Anhalt.
