Helping Children Overcome Reading Frustration - Volunteers Needed - Saxony-Anhalt seeks reading mentors to transform children's literacy

A national reading programme is calling for more volunteers in Saxony-Anhalt to help children develop their literacy skills. The Lesementor Bundesverband pairs adult mentors with young readers for weekly one-on-one sessions. Currently, 17,500 mentors across Germany support over 23,500 children in this way.

The programme works by matching each child with a dedicated mentor. These pairs meet at least once a week for a full year. Their aim is simple: to build a child's confidence in reading and foster a lasting enjoyment of books.

In Saxony-Anhalt, the organisation is now actively recruiting new volunteers to support local volunteering efforts. They need people in Magdeburg and other areas to either join as mentors or help set up local branches. No previous experience is required—just a willingness to spend time reading with a child.

The approach has already proven effective in other regions. By focusing on regular, personal interaction, mentors help children improve their skills in a relaxed setting. The programme's success relies on the commitment of volunteers who can offer consistency and encouragement.

The Lesementor Bundesverband continues to expand its reach, but more support is needed for local volunteering initiatives. Volunteers in Saxony-Anhalt can make a direct difference by giving just one hour a week. Their involvement will help more children gain stronger reading abilities and a greater love of books.
