Sangomas Go Viral: Traditional Healers Practice on TikTok and Facebook

In an unexpected blend of ancient tradition and modern technology, sangomas, traditional healers from Southern Africa, are now offering their services on social media platforms like TikTok and Facebook. This shift, driven partly by the economic crisis in Zimbabwe, is sparking debate among supporters and critics alike.

Traditional healing has long been a staple in Southern African culture, often serving as the first point of contact for those seeking help with physical and spiritual ailments. Sangomas, acting as intermediaries between the spiritual and physical realms, use their connection with ancestors, spirits, or deities to diagnose ailments and perform healing practices.

The digital age has brought a new dimension to this ancient practice. Sangomas like Gogo Mafirakureva, based in the UK, and Baba Jukwa, prominent in Harare, are reaching global audiences on TikTok and Facebook. They conduct live consultations, healing sessions, and cleansing ceremonies, charging significant fees that vary based on the location of the client. Payments are received via digital platforms such as PayPal, Western Union, and MoneyGram. Virtual one-on-one sessions via Zoom or WhatsApp are also common.

The economic crisis in Zimbabwe is pushing more people towards sangomas for guidance. With limited access to conventional healthcare, many are turning to traditional healing for solutions. However, this shift has not been without controversy. Critics argue that social media sangomas are driven by greed and profit, while supporters praise their innovative use of technology to reach a wider audience.

The intersection of ancient tradition and modern technology is evident in the growing presence of sangomas on social media platforms. As the debate around their motives continues, one thing is clear: the global reach of these traditional healers is expanding, driven by both necessity and innovation.
