Sandy Marks steps down after transforming Alexandria’s Democratic Committee

Sandy Marks is stepping down as chair of the Alexandria Democratic Committee (ADC) after nearly four years in the position. Marks leaves behind a legacy of increased membership and expanded influence, with around 450 members now, up from 150 when she joined. She has decided not to seek a third two-year term.

Marks' leadership has been praised by Mayor Alyia Gaskins and other city officials. Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley and several City Council members have described her as an effective leader with a passion for progressive values. During her tenure, Marks moved the ADC office from Old Town to Del Ray and expanded the annual Rock the Blue fundraising dinner to include prominent headliners.

Marks herself expressed her feelings about her time as chair, saying she feels 'thrilled and optimistic' about the rising leaders and increased membership she leaves behind. The ADC will open nominations for her replacement on Dec. 12, with an internal election on Jan. 5.

Sandy Marks' departure from the ADC chair position marks the end of an era of growth and expansion for the party in Alexandria. Her leadership has left a lasting impact, and the search for her replacement begins soon.
