Russian students win 1M rubles for AI-powered *Digital Geology* app

A team of students from Ural State Mining University has won the Student Startup competition. Their project, the Digital Geology educational app, stood out among other entries. The victory comes with a 1 million ruble grant to further develop their technology.

The university’s Digital Department has backed two major projects in recent years. Alongside Digital Geology, the Smart Mining platform also received support through the competition in the past two years.

The winning team includes Nikita Koltsov, Nikita Romanov, and Danil Bodrov. Their app uses computer vision and neural networks to analyse mining materials. Experts praised the project for its innovation and practical applications.

The students now plan to use the prize money to refine their algorithms. Their goal is to boost the system’s accuracy and expand its capabilities. The Smart Mining platform, another project from the same department, previously secured funding through earlier rounds of the competition.

Both initiatives highlight the university’s focus on digital solutions for the mining industry. The Digital Geology app, in particular, aims to improve how students and professionals study geological samples.

The 1 million ruble grant will help the team enhance their app’s performance. Their work could change how mining materials are examined in education and industry. The university continues to support student-led projects that combine technology with real-world needs.
