Russian Cinema’s 2025 Crisis Deepens as Moviegoers Stay Away

Russian cinema faced another challenging year in 2025, with attendance dropping further and audiences turning away from state-backed films. Despite Hollywood’s absence due to ongoing boycotts, local productions struggled to fill theaters, even after ticket prices were raised. The most popular films were escapist fantasies, while heavily funded ideological projects failed to attract viewers.

Cinema attendance in Russia fell by 20% in 2025 compared to the previous year. This decline came on top of an already sharp drop, with 2024 figures sitting at just half of pre-pandemic levels. Theaters increased ticket prices to cover losses, but this only pushed more moviegoers away.

The Russian film industry ended 2025 in a weakened state, with declining attendance, failed state-backed projects, and shrinking international appeal. While escapist and genre films found some success, the overall trend pointed to a deepening crisis. Without major changes, the industry’s struggles are likely to continue.
