Russia Plans Its Own Roblox After Blocking Global Platform in 2025

Russia may develop its own version of Roblox after authorities blocked the global platform in December 2025. The move followed accusations that Roblox hosted extremist and terrorist content. A proposal for a local alternative has now been put forward by Vladislav Grib, deputy secretary of Russia’s Public Chamber.

The idea aims to meet regional preferences while complying with Russian regulations. However, experts warn that building such a platform would be a massive and costly challenge.

Roskomnadzor banned Roblox on December 3, 2025, citing concerns over extremist material. In response, Grib suggested creating a Russian-made alternative. The proposal came from a company executive who argued that a homegrown platform could better suit local users and adhere to stricter content rules.

Yet, industry specialists doubt a quick or easy solution exists. Mikhail Pimenov, director of game industry development at Synergy University, estimates the project would take years and cost billions of rubles. He stressed that quality would be the key factor in competing with an established global brand.

Russia currently lacks the expertise needed for a project of this scale. Developing and maintaining a platform like Roblox requires constant server updates and fresh content. Experts describe the task as extremely complex, with no guarantee of success even with heavy investment.

A Russian alternative to Roblox faces steep hurdles, from funding to technical know-how. The country’s gaming industry would need to overcome major gaps in infrastructure and experience. For now, a high-quality domestic replacement remains out of reach.
