Renaissance & Flocabulary Launch Nationwide Rap Contest for Students
Renaissance, in collaboration with Flocabulary, is hosting a nationwide rap contest to engage students with curriculum and enhance writing skills. Students are invited to research, write, and rap about a historical figure who inspires them. The contest, open to students from Grades K-5 and 6-12, encourages participants to submit at least 16 lines about their chosen historical figure. Dr. Mervin Jenkins, Director and Solutions Consultant at Renaissance, commented on the use of hip-hop to engage students, stating, 'It's a powerful tool for connecting with students and improving their writing skills.' Two winners will be selected, one from each grade group, with their raps turned into Flocabulary video lessons and learning activities. These winning lessons will be shared with 20,000 schools across the US and premiered in April 2026 during National Poetry Month. The contest aims to celebrate and uplift student voices, providing a platform for young rappers to express their creativity and learn about history. With no information yet on the participating students or winners, anticipation builds for the inspiring historical figures to be featured in April 2026.
