Reflections on Belonging to the CHARA Collective

In the spring of 1992, David Mahaffey, a Holy Cross senior residing in a suite in Carlin and serving as a board member for CHARA, reminisced about a time where the absence of the Internet and email was a blessing. He was in a relationship and living the good life in his dormitory.

Reflections on Belonging to the CHARA Collective

The Boston Bruins have clinched a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs following a 3-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils. This achievement comes as the team's captain, Brad Marchand, was named the 27th captain in the franchise's history.

Meanwhile, at the College of the Holy Cross, the College of the Holy Cross Anti-Racism Alliance (CHARA) continues its mission to address issues of race and racism within the college community. CHARA, a student-led organization, works to promote awareness, dialogue, and action related to anti-racism and foster an inclusive and equitable campus environment.

One of CHARA's board members, David Mahaffey '92, found himself reflecting on his own past after joining the alliance during the Covid pandemic. Mahaffey, who was unaware of racial unrest at Holy Cross until his senior year, admitted that CHARA helped him acknowledge his own racism, which took the form of uncaring silence.

CHARA encourages introspection, particularly among white people, and provides a platform for students to engage with race-related issues critically. The organization collaborates with other campus groups, advocates for institutional changes to combat systemic racism, and amplifies marginalized voices.

On February 18, CHARA will be hosting relevant discussions in Hogan (4th floor). For more information about CHARA or to get involved, visit their website at www.chara1843.com or contact them at [email protected].

In the world of sports journalism, Allyson Noenickx serves as the Editor-in-Chief for the article "Bruins Season Preview: What to Look For on the Ice". Meanwhile, Mike O'Brien '23 holds the position of Chief Sports Editor for the article "Taylor Hall, Bruins Surge Into Playoffs", which was published after an embarrassing 8-1 loss to the Washington Capitals.

As the Boston Bruins gear up for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the College of the Holy Cross continues to strive for racial justice and equity within its community. The Bruins' victory serves as a reminder of the power of teamwork and the pursuit of a common goal, values that resonate deeply within both the sports world and the fight against racism.
