RCMP officer faces disciplinary hearing over racist and sexist group chat remarks

A disciplinary tribunal is reviewing the case of RCMP Constable Ian Solven, who admitted to making racist, sexist, and demeaning remarks in group chats. The officer’s comments targeted colleagues, vulnerable individuals, and even a sexual assault victim. A final decision on his penalty remains pending, with a hearing set for early 2026 in Vancouver.

Constable Solven’s misconduct included derogatory remarks about fellow officers based on gender and sexual orientation. He described a naked woman in a homeless shelter as 'his entertainment' and used the police communication system to call colleagues 'retarded'. Further inappropriate comments involved mocking the RCMP’s vacation plan and belittling a sexual assault victim.

The outcome of Solven’s case will be determined at the upcoming hearing in early 2026. His actions have already led to suspensions and calls for dismissal, with the RCMP emphasising the need to maintain professional standards. The decision will also address broader concerns about workplace conduct and public trust in law enforcement.
