Rastatt Library Gives Free Books to Toddlers in Early Literacy Push
Rastatt City Library has joined a nationwide effort to boost early reading skills among young children. The initiative, called Reading Start 1-2-3 – Three Milestones for Literacy, provides free book sets to families with toddlers. Parents can now pick up materials designed to encourage reading aloud and spark a love of books in their little ones.
The programme targets children at three key stages: one, two, and three years old. Sets for one- and two-year-olds are handed out during routine checkups (U6 and U7) at participating paediatric practices. Libraries, including Rastatt's, supply the sets for three-year-olds.
Each Reading Start set for three-year-olds includes a sturdy fabric tote bag, a picture book suited to the child's age, and a guide for parents with tips on reading aloud. The aim is to strengthen language skills and create positive reading habits early on.
Families can collect their free sets during the library's regular opening times: Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday and Friday from noon to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Beyond the physical materials, the programme's website, www.lesestart.de, offers extra resources. Visitors can download free literacy guides, sign up for online parent consultations, or subscribe to a newsletter packed with reading and crafting ideas.
Rastatt is one of over 5,500 libraries across Germany taking part in the initiative. The scheme is part of a wider push to give children better educational opportunities through early exposure to books.
The Reading Start programme gives parents practical tools to support their child's language development. With free book sets, expert advice, and easy access at local libraries, the initiative helps families build a foundation for lifelong learning. The materials are available now at Rastatt City Library during opening hours.
