Quick Tool for Automatically Generating Multiple Unique Writings
Get ready for a fascinating and educational adventure with easy paper spinners, a science activity that's both fun and easy to do at home! This activity is part of the "Tray a Day series" and was originally developed by the renowned artist Eric Carle.
To start, gather some basic materials: different types of paper, paper clips, and scissors. You can find instructions for making the paper spinners in a video or downloadable instructions. Once you've made your spinners, hold them between your fingers with the paper clip end down and let them fall to the ground to test their spinning ability.
Children can design a fair test to find out how one factor affects the time the spinner takes to fall. Factors that might affect the speed at which the spinner falls include the type of paper, number of paper clips, size of the spinner, and height dropped from. By asking simple questions, observing closely, performing simple tests, and gathering and recording data, children can learn about forces, air resistance, and gravity in relation to the paper spinner.
Upper Key Stage 2 Science focuses on these concepts in more depth, encouraging children to explain the forces acting on the spinner as it falls to the ground (air resistance pushing up and the weight of the object pulling down).
For Key Stage 1 Science, the Paper Spinner Template is suitable and aligns with the concept of working scientifically. A FREE Paper Spinner template is available to make the activity easier.
As an added challenge, consider why a mechanism like the paper spinner would not be a good alternative for astronauts' descent from the ISS. The activity also offers additional fun forces and motion experiments for further learning.

So, grab some paper, paper clips, and scissors, and let the fun and learning begin! Children are also encouraged to create a new design for the paper spinner and showcase their creativity. Happy spinning!
