Puerto Rico Marks 50 Years of Tobin Report's Economic Influence

Puerto Rico marked the 50th anniversary of the Tobin Report with a special event on Friday. The report, authored by Nobel laureate James Tobin, has significantly influenced the island's economic policies. Prominent figures, including Puerto Rico's Secretary of Economic Development and Commerce Sebastián Negrón Reichard, attended the commemoration.

Rosanna Torres Pizarro, president of the Center for a New Economy, kicked off the event by reflecting on the Tobin Report's legacy. The report, commissioned by former governor Rafael Hernández Colón during an economic downturn, has stood the test of time, offering valuable insights into Puerto Rico's economic crises.

James Tobin, born in 1918, was an American economist renowned for his work on economic theory and policy. His influence stemmed from his intelligence and moral seriousness, driving a wide impact on improving citizens' wellbeing. Former Yale President Richard Levin shared insights into Tobin's character and impact.

Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández highlighted three key lessons on effective leadership from the Tobin Report. The Tobin Center for Economic Policy at Yale University, named in Tobin's honor, has collaborated with 15 government agencies in Puerto Rico as of 2024.
