Public Radio Faces Reckoning Over Toxic Workplace Culture and Lack of Diversity
Public radio stations across the U.S. are facing renewed scrutiny over workplace culture and diversity. An anonymous Twitter account, @freepublicradio, has highlighted ongoing issues of toxicity at major outlets like WAMU, WNYC, and WGBH. Meanwhile, a planned 'Day of Action' aims to push for meaningful change in an industry long criticised for its lack of inclusion. Concerns about discrimination and harassment in public radio are not new. In 2017, leaders at NPR, WNYC, WBUR, and Minnesota Public Radio were exposed for misconduct. More recently, fresh accusations have emerged at WAMU, St. Louis Public Radio, and NPR itself. Alicia Montgomery, a long-time public radio professional, has spoken openly about her experiences with bullying and harassment.
Data from 2018 showed that only 23 percent of employees at member stations identified as people of colour. NPR's own newsroom was over 70 percent white in 2019, with 83 percent of voices on national shows belonging to white staff. These figures have fuelled calls for reform. In response, Sachi Kobayashi, director of member acquisition at Oregon Public Media, organised a 'Day of Action' for November 10. The initiative encourages people of colour to call in sick while white allies discuss race in the workplace. Six NPR member stations have committed to the event and agreed to ten action points, including addressing salary gaps, paying interns, and conducting regular culture surveys. However, as of 2021, no major stations had officially confirmed participation in the initiative, and no concrete measures had been publicly documented.
The 'Day of Action' marks another attempt to tackle long-standing issues in public media. While some stations have pledged support, broader participation remains unclear. The push for diversity and accountability continues as critics demand more than symbolic gestures.
