PsiQuantum Breaks Ground on Million-Qubit Quantum Computer in Illinois
The Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park (IQMP) is set to revolutionize quantum computing in the USA. On October 1, 2025, California-based PsiQuantum broke ground on its facility, aiming to house the world's first million-qubit, fault-tolerant quantum computer. This marks a significant step in IQMP's mission to prepare the USA for utility-scale quantum computing.
PsiQuantum's investment of over $1 billion is backing this ambitious project. The National Quantum Algorithm Center (NQAC), at the heart of IQMP, is designed to accelerate quantum-centric algorithm development. IBM joined IQMP in December 2024, further bolstering its capabilities with hybrid quantum-classical algorithm development using IBM's Quantum System Two.
The IQMP campus, led by Lamar Johnson Collaborative and constructed by Clayco, is expected to be completed by 2027. It will feature state-of-the-art cryogenic infrastructure, advanced equipment labs, and direct connections with Illinois' national laboratories and universities. The campus will host pioneering companies like PsiQuantum, led by Prof. Jeremy O'Brien, the company's president.
To support this development, the Chicago City Council presented a property tax refund initiative on October 9, 2024. This plan aims to reduce the tax load on quantum computing centers from 25% to 10% for 30 years, fostering growth in South Chicago.
IQMP's focus on domains like climate modeling, national security, healthcare, and logistics promises transformative advancements. With PsiQuantum's groundbreaking facility and IBM's partnership, IQMP is poised to become a global entry for quantum computing innovation, ensuring the USA leads in this emerging field.
