Thuringia's "Kindergarten in the Village Act" Proposed to Combat Demographic Change

In an effort to preserve rural communities and counteract demographic change, the Left faction in Thuringia has proposed the "Kindergarten in the Village Act". This legislative initiative aims to ensure the continued operation of kindergartens and primary schools in small villages, thereby maintaining these institutions as central pillars of village life and community cohesion.

The Act addresses the demographic challenges faced by Thuringia, particularly its aging population, by:

  1. Ensuring the continued operation of kindergartens and primary schools in small villages, preventing closures due to declining child populations.
  2. Serving as an instrument to support families and young residents, thus incentivizing families to remain in or move to rural communities.
  3. Counteracting the trend of school closures linked to fewer children, which is a significant issue in parts of Eastern Germany where the number of women in childbearing age has dropped sharply.
  4. By sustaining local educational infrastructure, the Act helps mitigate rural depopulation and supports demographic renewal in aging communities.

Ulrike Grosse-Röthig, a Left education politician, made a statement in Erfurt, emphasizing that "this requires money." The Left faction is requesting 100 million euros annually from the federal special fund for municipalities. In addition, they are proposing a 25 million euro fund per year for the next ten years.

Grosse-Röthig criticized the coalition government of CDU, BSW, and SPD for not doing enough in the education sector to counter demographic change in Thuringia. She stated that she is not seeing much strategy from the Thuringian state government in the education sector.

The Left faction's plans also aim to allow clubs or other social carriers to use the buildings to keep the kindergartens operating, even if they do not meet the minimum number of children. This multi-purpose use is intended to prevent the closure of kindergartens and primary schools in Thuringia.

The proposed Act aligns with documented demographic challenges in Germany, especially Eastern regions like Thuringia, where many schools have closed due to fewer children and population aging.
