In Solingen, the FDP faction has raised concerns about the severe shortage of skilled workers in daycare facilities (Kitas), highlighting the need for reliable and high-quality care for early childhood education and the compatibility of family and work.

The FDP faction has asked the administration questions about the care situation in Solingen’s daycare facilities, focusing on seven key areas:

  1. Current Staffing Levels and Shortages: The FDP wants to know the severity of the shortage of qualified childcare professionals and the actual staffing levels compared to required standards.
  2. Impact on Care Quality and Capacity: The faction is interested in understanding how the shortage affects the quality of care and the ability of Kitas to accommodate children. They are concerned about growing waiting lists and group sizes exceeding recommendations.
  3. Recruitment and Retention Strategies: The FDP wants to know what measures are in place or planned to recruit new skilled workers and retain existing staff, including incentives, improved working conditions, or training programs.
  4. Support and Resources for Staff: The faction is seeking information about additional support, such as continuing education, wage increases, or better working hours, being considered to make the profession more attractive.
  5. Collaboration with Educational Institutions: The FDP is interested in learning about cooperation with vocational schools or universities to ensure a pipeline of qualified future workers, as well as apprenticeship or internship programs.
  6. Use of Technology or Alternative Models: The faction is curious about innovative approaches, such as digital tools, part-time staff, or inclusion of pedagogical assistants, to mitigate the impact of shortages.
  7. Long-Term Strategic Planning: The faction wants to know the city’s long-term plan to sustainably solve the staffing crisis in daycares and secure high-quality early childhood education.

To combat the crisis, the FDP faction typically advocates for proactive measures such as investing in better wages and working conditions, strengthening training and qualification pathways, increasing cooperation with educational institutions, exploring flexible staffing models, and enhancing the overall appreciation of early childhood educators as a profession.

Recently, a new staffing regulation for daycare facilities in North Rhine-Westphalia was implemented in December, which allows for the temporary hiring of non-educational staff to reduce short-term closures. However, the use of additional staff is limited to 6 weeks per Kitas year, and Nina Brattig, chairperson of the FDP Solingen faction, has criticized the limited duration of the staffing provision.

For families without the support of grandparents, the only options often are to arrange babysitters or reduce their own work hours. Reliable and high-quality care is considered crucial for early childhood education and the compatibility of family and work. The FDP faction believes it is urgently necessary to clarify these questions to improve the long-term situation for parents and children in Solingen.

  1. The FDP faction in Solingen believes that it is essential to address the concerns regarding the staffing crisis in daycare facilities, particularly focusing on recruiting new childcare professionals, retaining existing staff, and enhancing working conditions.
  2. In light of the current policy landscape, the FDP faction suggests advocating for long-term strategic planning, such as increased investments in early childhood education, strengthening training and qualification pathways, and exploring flexible staffing models to ensure reliable and high-quality care for families.
