Project 'Crater': Transform 'Ciudad Real' into a green, sustainable, and connected city
Ciudad Real, a city of around 75,000 people, is set to undergo a major green transformation. Known for its wines and agricultural trade, the city will soon become more sustainable through an ambitious environmental project. The plan focuses on creating green spaces, improving mobility, and tackling rising temperatures.
The Crater project will reshape Ciudad Real into a greener, more connected urban area. A key part involves turning the old Gasset Park car park into a multifunctional green space. This new area will feature 250 trees, native plants, and a system to collect rainwater for irrigation.
The initiative also aims to reduce the city’s heat island effect, as average temperatures have climbed by 3.6 degrees over the last 50 years. By using native, climate-resistant plants and improving water absorption, the project hopes to cool urban zones naturally. Beyond greening, the scheme will boost biodiversity by creating habitats for insects, birds, and other wildlife. The University of Castilla-La Mancha will contribute by renaturalising its campus, cutting down on paved surfaces, and planting adapted vegetation. The project is a joint effort between the Ciudad Real City Council, the Biodiversity Foundation, and the university. Funding comes from the EU’s Next Generation programme. The goal is not just to add green spaces but to encourage walking and cycling while making the city fairer for all residents.
The Crater project will bring long-term changes to Ciudad Real’s environment and daily life. New green corridors, better water management, and wildlife-friendly areas will reshape the city. The work also supports broader aims like cleaner air, cooler streets, and more sustainable transport.
