Plumstead's historic library reopens as a vibrant cultural and leisure hub
Plumstead's historic library has been transformed into a modern cultural and leisure hub. Hawkins\Brown led the redevelopment, blending old and new to create the Plumstead Centre. The project has already earned prestigious architecture awards for its thoughtful design.
The Grade II listed Plumstead Library, once underused, now houses a mix of facilities for all ages. Inside, visitors find separate children's and adults' libraries, a café, and flexible spaces for collaboration. A gym, badminton court, and two large studios support performing arts, yoga, and exhibitions.
The refurbishment carefully restored original features like barrel-vaulted skylights and parquet flooring. A two-storey extension adds new leisure areas, with a striking full-height glazed entrance. Brick, glass, and metal were chosen to match the library's existing character. The centre's open layout allows clear views across the entire building. Cllr Danny Thorpe, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, highlighted its adaptable design as a key strength. The project marks the first phase of the borough's wider Urban Framework for Plumstead. Hawkins\Brown's work on the centre won both the 2022 RIBA London Award and the 2022 RIBA London Conservation Award.
The Plumstead Centre now offers a mix of cultural, leisure, and sports facilities under one roof. Its blend of restored heritage and modern design has set a standard for future developments in the area. The building stands as a key part of Greenwich's long-term plans for Plumstead.
