Pier 22 transforms Vienna's riverside into a free recreational paradise
Pier 22 has become a popular riverside destination in Vienna. The newly redesigned area along the New Danube offers free swimming spots, dining, and leisure activities. Thousands of residents visited the site during the summer of 2025. The transformation of Pier 22 began with the opening of Café Pier 22 near the U1 subway station. A seasonal outdoor café also welcomed visitors early on. By October 17, 2025, a covered sports court was made available to the public at no cost.
The site now spans around 8,000 square meters, featuring open water access points and suspended lounging nets over the water. Shaded areas, a shallow swimming zone for children, and barrier-free platforms with showers have been added. Fitness zones and spacious sunbathing spots complete the amenities.
Construction is still underway, with the final phase set to expand the area to roughly 13,000 square meters. Once finished, it will stretch about 400 meters along the Danube Island. An Italian restaurant is also planned for the new island section, expected to open by next summer. The entire project should be fully completed by spring 2026. Pier 22 has quickly grown into a modern recreational hub for Vienna. Free amenities, new swimming areas, and dining options continue to attract visitors. The final expansion will further increase space and facilities for public use.
