Philadelphia Kicks Off OURfest with Powerful LGBTQ+ Poetry Slam
Philadelphia is gearing up for a weekend of love, pride, and celebration with OURfest, a city-wide event honouring the LGBTQ+ community. This year's festivities kicked off with 'Loud & Proud', a National Coming Out Day poetry slam held at Stir Lounge. The event was organised by Boston Gordon, a long-time advocate for queer voices, and Stacy Vey, the lounge's owner.
Gordon, who has been cultivating spaces for queer voices for over a decade through initiatives like You Can't Kill a Poet, brought 'Loud & Proud' to Philadelphia. The event aimed to foster an environment where people could share their thoughts and experiences. Among the poets was Rowan Mucci, who hoped that the event would empower others to speak out about their experiences.
The poetry slam served as a powerful reminder that speaking one's truth can be a form of pride. It was a poignant start to OURfest, which promises to be a weekend filled with similar moments of connection and celebration.
Josh Sanders, a reporter and multi-skilled journalist at CBS News Philadelphia, was present to cover the event. OURfest continues this weekend, with more events planned to celebrate love, pride, and the LGBTQ+ community in Philadelphia.
