Penguins Foundation and U. S. Steel Partner to Launch "Little Free Libraries" Throughout the Pittsburgh Region

Seven new Little Free Libraries have opened across the Pittsburgh region. The project is a joint effort by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and U. S. Steel. These book-sharing hubs aim to boost literacy in communities where access to reading materials is limited.

The libraries are part of the ongoing Reading Champions Program, which encourages reading among children and adults. Each location offers free books around the clock, with titles chosen by Penguins staff, players, and U. S. Steel employees.

The libraries have been placed in public spots, including PPG Paints Arena, the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, and several U. S. Steel facilities. While the exact cities hosting them remain unconfirmed, the initiative focuses on high-need areas.

Books inside include popular titles like Build to Last by Jim Collins, Open by Andre Agassi, and Unbroken by Lauren Hillenbrand. Each copy carries a personal note from donors—such as Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas, player Jason Spezza, and Amanda Kessel—to motivate readers.

Little Free Library, a nonprofit based in St. Paul, Minnesota, supports the effort. Their mission involves expanding book access worldwide through volunteer-run exchange boxes. This partnership marks another step in bringing more reading opportunities to Pittsburgh’s diverse communities.

The libraries are now open 24/7, offering free books to anyone who visits. Titles were carefully selected by U. S. Steel workers and Penguins personnel, ensuring a mix of inspiring and engaging reads. The project builds on the long-standing collaboration between the team and U. S. Steel to promote literacy across the region.
