Paulding Schools: DOT Enhances Pedestrian Safety After Student Accident
Paulding County Schools, lacking authority and crossing guards, welcome changes by the county's Department of Transportation (DOT) following a student's accident. Sabrynna, the injured student, continues her recovery, affecting her graduation plans.
Before the incident, a volunteer had been helping students cross safely at the intersection of Winn Road and Sundance Drive. A traffic study, initially considering a traffic light, was already underway but found insufficient traffic volume to justify it.
After Sabrynna's accident, the DOT shifted focus to pedestrian safety. They plan to install two concrete islands with rectangular rapid flashing beacon systems, activated by pedestrians to enhance visibility. Additionally, they have cut back trees blocking signs and added bigger, brighter reflective crosswalks. The installation of crosswalks is expected within weeks, with flashing signs following in a few months.
Paulding County DOT's changes aim to improve pedestrian safety at the intersection, following Sabrynna's accident and the subsequent traffic study. These modifications, including reflective crosswalks and flashing beacon systems, are expected to enhance safety for students and other pedestrians.
