Passionate Debater Calls for Integrating Speech & Debate into School Curriculums

A passionate debater argues for the integration of speech and debate classes into school curriculums, highlighting their benefits and potential solutions to current barriers.

Debate programs enhance students' comprehension, critical thinking, and presentation skills while allowing exploration of diverse topics. The author, an experienced debater, has analysed pressing issues like global warming and economic inequality through a policymaking lens in tournaments across the U.S.

Currently, many schools lack formal debate programs, creating barriers for students. The author's high school is among them, requiring independent preparation. However, existing history and English teachers could act as debate coaches, and school districts could combine resources to launch programs. Meanwhile, prestigious tournaments often exclude non-school-affiliated debaters.

The author believes all schools should integrate debate, making it available to all students, not just those from private schools who can afford competition fees. An organisation advocating for debate democratisation could play a crucial role in this.

The author looks forward to continuing debate in college, using honed skills to fight for change. To make debate accessible to all, schools should integrate it into curriculums, and existing resources should be leveraged. With support, debate can become a tool for all students to develop crucial skills and explore important topics.
