Fulbright Scholar Steve Youngblood to Focus on Peace Journalism and Countering Misinformation in Moldova
Park University Educator Secures Third Fulbright Scholar Award
Steve Youngblood, a renowned associate professor of communication arts at Park University, has been selected as a 2023-24 Fulbright Scholar. This marks the third time Youngblood has been chosen for this prestigious programme, which is funded by the U.S. Congress and administered by the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
Youngblood's work during this scholarship will focus on peace journalism and countering misinformation, a field in which he has extensive experience. As the director of the Center for Global Peace Journalism at Park University, he has taught peace journalism in 45 countries and territories worldwide.
Moldova, a small Eastern European country, houses a Russian-backed breakaway republic, Transnistria, occupied by 1,500 Russian troops. The country has been bombarded by Russian misinformation and disinformation, and is geographically surrounded on three sides by Ukraine. Youngblood's work in Moldova is expected to contribute significantly to promoting media coverage that promotes peace and counters conflict-driven misinformation.
In addition to his work at Moldova State University in Chisinău during the 2023-24 academic year, Youngblood will also collaborate with two journalism organisations and a youth organisation in Moldova. This collaboration is expected to further enhance the impact of his work in promoting peace journalism and countering misinformation.
Youngblood's dedication to peace journalism has been recognised by various organisations. In 2020-21, he was awarded the Luxembourg Peace Prize for Outstanding Peace Journalism. He has also been honoured by the U.S. Department of State and Rotary International, and was named World Citizen of the Year by the United Nations Association of Greater Kansas City in 2012.
Upon returning from his Fulbright scholarship, Youngblood will share his experiences and become an active supporter of international exchange, furthering the goals of the Fulbright Program. He serves as editor of The Peace Journalist, a semi-annual Park University publication that promotes scholarship and practice in peace journalism.
