Oxford Law Launches First Global Online Programme for Board Directors in 2026

The University of Oxford’s Faculty of Law has partnered with online learning platform edX to launch its first digital programme. The move expands Oxford’s professional training to a global audience for the first time. Over 40 courses will now be available through the platform, including a new governance programme for board directors.

The first offering, the Oxford Legal and Governance Foundations for Board Directors Program, will begin in early 2026. Professor John Armour, Dean of the Faculty of Law, will lead the initiative as part of the faculty’s growing Professional Development Program portfolio.

The Faculty of Law has been running in-person professional courses since 2024. By shifting online with 2U, the parent company of edX, the programme aims to reach more practitioners worldwide. The new partnership follows existing collaborations between 2U and other Oxford departments, including the Blavatnik School of Government and Saïd Business School.

The upcoming Oxford Legal and Governance Foundations for Board Directors Program will focus on essential legal and governance skills for company directors. It builds on the faculty’s research to address real-world challenges faced by legal professionals. Meanwhile, the University of Tübingen’s Graduate Academy will also launch an online session in January 2026, led by Dr. Christine Schmidt, covering similar professional development themes.

Oxford’s decision to go digital reflects a broader push to make its expertise more accessible. The faculty has emphasised that the programme will maintain high academic standards while offering flexibility for busy professionals.

The new online programme will start in early 2026 under Professor Armour’s leadership. It marks the first time Oxford’s legal training has been made available globally through a digital format. The expansion is expected to attract a diverse group of board directors and legal practitioners seeking specialised governance education.
