Over 1,000 Back Yale Unions' Push for Fair Contracts, Better Wages
Over 1,000 people, including more than 100 Yale undergraduates, gathered in New Haven to march in support of Yale unions renegotiating contracts with the University. The rally, organized by the unions themselves, started at the New Haven Green and ended at the School of Medicine, with chants of 'Who's got the power? We got the power!' echoing through the march.
The rally was attended by Barbara Vereen, chief steward of Local 34, who called for respect and fair treatment from Yale Medicine and the dean of medicine. Many protesters held signs referencing increased living costs and stagnant wages. Speakers at the rally demanded job security commitments, child provisions, and wage increases to match inflation. Yale's media office confirmed ongoing negotiations with Locals 34 and 35, as the current contracts for both unions will expire in January 2027.
Adding weight to the event, Frank J. Spencer, head of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, traveled to Portland, CT, to attend the rally.
The rally highlighted the demands of Yale unions for better working conditions, including fair wages, job security, and child provisions. With ongoing negotiations and the support of union members and allies, both parties aim to reach a satisfactory agreement before the current contracts expire in 2027.
