OPM Unveils New Initiatives to Boost Federal Intern Recruitment
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has introduced two new initiatives to strengthen federal intern recruitment. The Pathways Intern Talent Program and the Recent Graduates Talent Program were launched to enhance federal agencies' hiring capabilities and reduce barriers to entry into the federal workforce.
OPM finalized regulations revamping the Pathways Program in April 2024, broadening eligibility and reducing work hour requirements. Both programs are now accessible to agencies via the USAJOBS platform, similar to shared certifications. The Pathways Intern Talent Program, live since March 2024, connects eligible interns with other federal agencies for potential conversion to permanent employment in the United States. The Recent Graduates program, implemented in July, offers similar opportunities to recent graduates. Agencies are encouraged to consult their USAJOBS Agency Talent Portal point of contact for specific instructions before using these programs. OPM will soon conduct demonstrations of the new functionality to agency HR leaders.
These programs aim to improve the conversion of internships into full-time positions, a key priority of the Biden administration. By expanding eligibility and reducing work hour requirements, OPM seeks to enhance federal agencies' hiring capacity and speed, making it easier for individuals to join the federal workforce in the United States.
