Obermayr Sonnenberg Kindergarten Celebrates 10th Anniversary

The Obermayr Sonnenberg Kindergarten in Wiesbaden, Germany, celebrated its 10th anniversary on Saturday. The kindergarten, which was built on a wild, overgrown area on the edge of the district, has undergone significant changes and challenges since its inception.

The kindergarten was the result of a collaboration between the city and a non-profit sponsor. The city sold the area to the sponsor in 2012 with the condition that a kindergarten would be created there. Detlef Bendel, a key figure in the establishment of the kindergarten, played a crucial role in making it a reality.

The architecture of the kindergarten is open and encourages conversation among children, parents, and educators. It consists of eight group rooms, each focusing on a pedagogical profile that includes Reggio pedagogy, a common children's restaurant, the principle of the marketplace, and a central sleeping room for all nursery children.

The kindergarten's operation was in danger of being terminated due to financial reasons scarcely half a year after the opening in 2015. However, the team, parents, and sponsor representative, Dr. Gerhard Obermayr, worked together to overcome these challenges. Dr. Obermayr praised the team and parents for their efforts.

Michael Merten, a father from the beginning, was active in the parents' council for five years. He played a significant role in helping the kindergarten navigate through its early financial struggles.

The kindergarten has also been a topic of debate in city politics. The conflict over the Obermayr Sonnenberg Kindergarten was brought into city politics by Mayor Bauer and the late Dr. Werner Jopp. Despite the challenges, the kindergarten has become an integral part of the community.

In recent years, the Kindertagesstätte Herz Jesu in Wiesbaden Sonnenberg has announced plans to expand. Renovation work is underway, resulting in 30 additional places for children under and over three years old by 2021.

The Obermayr Sonnenberg Kindergarten's 10th anniversary celebration was a time to reflect on its journey and look forward to its future. The kindergarten continues to provide a nurturing and stimulating environment for children, fostering their growth and development.

In a surprising turn of events, an unexpected financial windfall of 10,000 euros was donated to the Kita of the evangelical Thalkirchengemeinde. This donation will be used to redesign the playground at the Kita, further enhancing the facilities for the children.

As the Obermayr Sonnenberg Kindergarten looks forward to the next decade, it continues to be a testament to the power of community collaboration and perseverance. The kindergarten's story serves as an inspiration for similar initiatives, demonstrating that with dedication and determination, even the most challenging projects can be realised.

The Obermayr Sonnenberg Kindergarten, in its 10th year, is not only a celebration of a decade of education-and-self-development and learning but also a testament to the power of community collaboration and perseverance. Despite the initial financial struggles, the kindergarten's operation was sustained through the efforts of the team, parents, and sponsor representatives, ensuring a nurturing and stimulating environment for children's continued growth and development.
