Spoilers Ahead: Consider Yourself Warned.

Needed Advance Warning on Complex Parts

Keep the following in mind:

  • BILLBOARD, BANNER, and SIGN belong in different categories. (SIGN serves as a verb.)
  • PEOPLE contains celebrity news and gossip within its pages.
  • Examine the final letters of each word in the Purple section. (You're after objects you wouldn't want landing on you.)

Now, bracing myself, I'll break down the sections with the revealed categories:

  • Yellow: Employ - The primary category centers around employment activities. The words are: PROPOSE, AGREEMENT, RETAIN, CONTRACT.
  • Green: Web Technologies - The second-most straightforward category pertains to various web technologies. The words are: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, MENU.
  • Blue: Periodicals - The second-hardest category consists of popular publications. The words are: BILLBOARD RAG, PEOPLE, STAR, TIMES.
  • Purple: Medieval Weapons - The final and most challenging category includes words related to medieval weaponry. The words are: CRUXWORD, SNARL, B ended manner, AMALGAM.

Now that the dreaded spoilers are out of the way, let's dive into the actual answers to today's Connections puzzle.

The Yellow Words of the Day

The Yellow category is, surprisingly, the most straightforward. The theme for today's Yellow puzzle is EMPLOY, and the words are: PROPOSE, AGREEMENT, RETAIN, CONTRACT.

The Green Words of the Day

The Green category is supposed to be the second-easiest. The theme for today's Green puzzle is WEB TECHNOLOGIES, and the words are: HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT, MENU (I suppose HEADER and SIDEBAR could also fit).

The Blue Words of the Day

The Blue category is the second-hardest puzzle. The theme for today's Blue puzzle is PERIODICALS, and the words are: BILLBOARD, PEOPLE, STAR (entertaining publication), TIMES (journal).

The Purple Words of the Day

The Purple puzzle is considered the hardest. The theme for today's Purple puzzle is MEDIEVAL WEAPONRY, and the words are: CRUXWORD (crossword puzzle), SNARL (features a grinning variety of medieval weaponry), B ends with a medieval weapon, AMALGAM (contains a warrior's weapon as an ingredient).

How I Cracked the Code

I suspected BANNER, SIGN, and BILLBOARD might all revolve around large displays of information. A fourth option didn't immediately come to me.

RETAIN might refer to retaining data or retaining water, for example. Let's stick with that, though I couldn't immediately find others that connect.

TIME and MENU might be items displayed along the top of a desktop. SIDEBAR could potentially be a fit, too.

GRIN, SNARL, and LANCE struck me as all possessing weapons at their ends (grinning mace, snarling lance). CROSSWORD and RAINBOW (sword and bow) fit nicely with that theme.

BANNER might mean "standout," as in a BANNER year for profits. This fitting nicely with STAR and Billboard. MENU still doesn't really fit here, sadly.

I hypothesized that BANNER, SIGN, and BILLBOARD might all revolve around various advertising mediums. HEADER, MENU, and SIDEBAR appear to be parts of a web page layout. The colors now make more sense!

So that leaves us with PEOPLE, STAR, BILLBOARD, and TIME. These all seem to be magazines.

Connections: A Puzzling Guide

Intrigued? Learn how to approach Connections with our walkthrough.

First, locate the Connections puzzle either on the New York Times website or within their Games app (formerly the Crossword app). You'll see a game board with 16 squares, each containing one word or phrase. Your job is to select a cluster of four squares with a common connection.

Choose a grouping and hit the "Submit" button. If you guessed correctly, the category and color will be revealed. (Yellow is the easiest, followed by Green, then Blue, then Purple.) If your guess was incorrect, you'll have the chance to try again.

Keep guessing until you've correctly identified all four groups. However, make four mistakes, and the game will end, with the answers revealed.

Winning strategies for Connections:

  1. Be patient - The connections can be tricky. Expect overlapping categories.
  2. Look for the seemingly unconnected - If WHISTLER and CLOSE don't seem to fit your themes, investigate further.
  3. Consult helpful hints like these daily.
