NY Teacher's Natural Hair Club Empowers Students Beyond the CROWN Act
A teacher in New York has launched an after-school club to help students embrace their natural hair. Jade Lambert, who works at Patrick Henry Prep, started the group in October 2025 after facing her own struggles with hair discrimination. The initiative comes years after the state banned bias against natural hairstyles in schools and workplaces.
Lambert's decision to create the club grew from her personal journey with natural hair. She wanted students to see caring for their hair as both self-respect and resistance. Research backs her concerns: Black students often face teasing or unfair treatment because of their natural hairstyles, far more than their non-Black peers.
The club offers more than just support. Lambert secured a grant to buy hair tools and products for members. She also designed a curriculum to teach students how to maintain, style, and celebrate their natural hair. Her goal is simple—to help them love and honour their hair in a world that hasn't always done the same.
New York's CROWN Act, passed in 2019, made it illegal to discriminate against natural hair and protective styles. Since then, over a dozen states have followed with similar laws. Yet, despite legal progress, no official records track how many schools have added programs like Lambert's. Adoption remains uneven, with efforts often led by individual educators rather than widespread policy.
The natural hair club at Patrick Henry Prep gives students tools and confidence to wear their hair proudly. While laws like the CROWN Act provide legal protection, Lambert's work shows how grassroots efforts fill the gaps. Her program stands as one of many local responses to a problem that persists beyond legislation.
