Nxera to Recruit Over 500 Professionals for Artificial Intelligence-centered Data Center Positions

Singtel's regional data centre arm, Nxera, has announced an ambitious plan to tackle the talent shortage in Singapore's data centre and AI sectors. The initiatives aim to train and hire over 500 individuals for AI-focused data centre roles, addressing the growing demand in the industry.

Training and Hiring Target

Nxera, in collaboration with educational institutions and industry partners, is set to train and hire more than 500 people, including fresh graduates and mid-career professionals, across various roles such as consultancy, design, engineering, operations, and sustainability.

Partnerships

Nxera's partnerships extend to the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), Temasek Polytechnic (TP), Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), and Singapore Polytechnic (SP). These partnerships aim to co-develop AI data centre-related courses and structured work-study programmes, combining classroom learning with real-world project experience.

Work-Study and Degree Programmes

One of the highlighted pathways is Nxera’s Work-Study Degree Programme with SIT and diplomas specialized in Green Data Centres offered in partnership with ITE and SIT. These programmes enable students to gain industry-relevant skills while working on practical projects in data centre operations and sustainability.

Industry Alliances

Nxera supports the TechSkills Accelerator for ITE and Polytechnics Alliance (TIP Alliance), led by the Infocomm Media Development Authority and co-chaired by the Singapore Computer Society and SGTech. The alliance aims to improve employment outcomes for ITE and polytechnic graduates and strengthen their industry readiness.

Job Opportunities

The hiring drive includes internships, graduate programs, work-study roles, and full-time jobs. Approximately 40% of the roles are entry-level positions, reflecting a strong focus on developing local junior talent despite global trends of reduced junior hiring due to AI automation.

Government Support

The initiatives have government backing, as reflected in remarks by Senior Minister of State Tan Kiat How, who emphasised the importance of these efforts for Singapore's digital economy and noted rising median salaries for information and communications technology polytechnic graduates, signalling good career prospects.

With these initiatives, Nxera is addressing the talent crunch in the data centre and AI industry through integrated training programs, strong partnerships with educational and industry stakeholders, and extensive job creation focusing on entry-level to mid-career roles to ensure a skilled workforce aligned with Singapore’s AI ambitions.

Moreover, Nxera is accelerating its expansion plans with the development of several AI data centres in the Asia region. The 58MW sustainable AI-ready data centre, DC Tuas, in Singapore is set to begin operations in early 2026. DC Tuas will be one of the largest liquid-cooled AI data centres in Asia with high power and water efficiency. Nxera also intends to make a full transition to renewable energy sources for its operations by 2028.

Singapore aims to expand data centre capacity by more than one-third in the next few years due to the acceleration in digital and AI adoption. These recruitment and training initiatives are in support of Singapore's artificial intelligence (AI) ambitions.

In addition, Nxera has developed a Sustainable AI Data Centre Academy in collaboration with these institutes to address the talent gap in the data centre industry. The academy includes competency-based, stackable micro-credentials that align with the latest technologies and practices. More than 1,000 professionals across the ecosystem could be trained through these courses in partnership with the industry and institutes.

The Sustainable AI Data Centre Career Day, which brought together over 1,000 students, job seekers, and mid-career professionals, along with government agencies, institutes of higher learning, and industry leaders, was a significant event in showcasing the wide range of careers in the data centre and digital infrastructure sectors and boosting Singapore's talent pipeline.
