Nursing Trainees Successfully Run a Hospital Ward for Ten Days
Sixteen nursing trainees from the Justitia cohort took full control of ward 3a at Helios St. Elisabeth Hospital in Bad Kissingen. For ten days, they managed all daily operations in the acute geriatrics unit without direct oversight. The project, called Trainees Run a Ward, blends practical experience with real responsibility to prepare students for their final exams.
The initiative required months of preparation. Trainees planned every detail in advance, from shift rotations to equipment instructions, pharmacy orders, and meal arrangements. Their goal was to implement patient-centred primary nursing under the watchful eyes of experienced instructors.
During the ten-day period, the group handled both early and late shifts. They organised workflows, coordinated care, and ensured the ward ran smoothly. School principal Marianne Masso noted how quickly the students adapted, praising their teamwork and professionalism. Patients responded positively to the trainees' approach. Many highlighted their friendly communication, dedication, and reliability. The project is a fixed part of the training curriculum, reinforcing the hands-on nature of nursing education. The hospital sees this as a key way to prepare young staff for future challenges. With the new academic year beginning in September, applications for the next intake remain open.
