North Rhine-Westphalia's Childcare Boom Transforms Early Education Workforce
Childcare in North Rhine-Westphalia has seen major changes over the past decade. More young children are attending daycare near me, and the workforce supporting them has grown significantly. New figures reveal shifts in staff numbers, demographics, and demand for early education services since 2015.
The number of children enrolled in daycare has risen by 18 percent since 2015. Back then, around 565,000 attended, but by 2025, the figure reached roughly 669,000. The sharpest increase came from children under three, with their numbers climbing by about 27 percent.
Occupancy rates for this age group have also jumped. In 2015, only 32 percent of under-threes had a daycare place, but by 2024, this had risen to over 45 percent. The expansion reflects both higher demand and more available spaces.
To meet this demand, the workforce has grown substantially. The total number of staff in early childhood education reached around 175,000 by March 2025. Pedagogical roles alone increased by 41 percent, from nearly 97,000 in 2015 to almost 137,000 in 2025. Non-pedagogical staff saw an even steeper rise of about 65 percent.
The composition of the workforce has also shifted. Male pedagogical staff more than doubled, rising from about 3,900 in 2015 to roughly 10,300 in 2025. Meanwhile, the average age of pedagogical workers dropped slightly, from 39.3 years to 38.8 years over the same period.
The expansion of childcare services has led to more children attending daycare for longer hours. With a larger and more diverse workforce, North Rhine-Westphalia has adapted to rising demand, particularly for younger age groups. These changes highlight the growing importance of early childhood education in the region.
